This is a great specimen of one of the most desirable ammonites from the United States. This is a beautiful Placenticeras meeki from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This ammonite is characterized by having broad convex, nearly unornamented flanks and smooth venter. This disc-shaped ammonite has a very narrow, flat keel. The ammonite exhibits the colorful outer shell ammolite in beautiful fashion. The shell of the fossil cephalopod flashes the reds and greens typical of an ammolitic ammonite (hard to see in photo). . The fossil is well perched on the matrix block base. This is a very fine specimen of Placenticeras meeki from South Dakota. (White streak is in the photo, not on the fossil.)
