Age:  Cretaceous
Formation:  Fox Hills Formation
Location:  South Dakota
Size:  Ammonite is 2.7 inches across

Here is a very nice fossil cephalopod. This is Hoploscaphites nicolletii from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type has many ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on either side. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. Much of the iridescent nacre is still present, and a many beautiful colors are displayed. The ammonite has been prepared fully free of matrix - both sides of the ammonite display very well. This is a very detailed example of Hoploscaphites from the Cretaceous

A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
