This is a fabulous ammonite fossil. It is a natural Hoploscaphites mandanensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and many distinct large nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits very fine detail. The cephalopod is extremely inflated and 3-D, and the reddish-brown iridescent nacre is beautifully displayed. The ammonite is wonderfully preserved on the natural block of matrix, and the other side also showcases its iridescent shell beautifully. This is a top quality display Hoploscaphites mandanensis from the Fox Hills Formation.
