This is an uncommon ammonite fossil. It is a natural double Hoploscaphites nicolleti from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs that are coarse in the beginning and becoming very fine near the living chamber. The keel is flat and narrow with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. These ammonites are very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibit fine detail. The cephalopods have the living chambers present, and the brownish color is beautifully displayed. The ammonites are wonderfully preserved in a large, natural block of concretionary matrix. This is a very nice pair of Hoploscaphites from the Fox Hills Formation.
