This is an uncommon ammonite fossil. It is a fine specimen of Hoploscaphites nebrascensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has distinct ribbing and a somewhat squared keel. There is one rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. The dark, iridescent shell of this ammonite is very easily seen. This is a nice example of an unusual type of iridescent ammonite from the Black Hills.
