This is a very nice ammonite fossil. It is a detailed Hoploscaphites cheyennensis from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and many distinct large nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes on both sides. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod is extremely inflated and 3-D, and the reddish-brown iridescent nacre is well displayed. The ammonite is wonderfully preserved on a large, natural block of concretionary matrix that also contains a cool bivalve (not pictured). This is a fine Hoploscaphites cheyennensis from the Fox Hills Formation.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
