This is a beautiful ammonite fossil. It is a large, Unidentified Ammonite from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has numerous ribs and many distinct large, pointed nodes. The keel is quite flat, with a row of prominent nodes that stick up and were prepared free of matrix. This ammonite is very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibits fine detail. The cephalopod is extremely inflated and 3-D, and the rainbow mother-of-pearl, iridescent nacre is beautifully displayed (hard to see in photo). The ammonite is wonderfully preserved within a fully round concretion - it looks like a large cannonball! This is a very impressive, collectible ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
