Here is a very uncommon Linella avis stromatolite from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae, or ''cyanobacteria''. This large stromatolite is estimated to be about 800 million years old! These closely packed stromatolites are believed to have been deposited in conditions that subjected them to intermittent periods of submergence, possibly seasonal in nature. This slice of stromatolite has been cut with a diamond saw and highly polished on one side for optimal display. The cell pattern of the stromatolite is easily seen, and the different colors of mineral replacement are nicely showcased. This is a very distinct stromatolite specimen from an unusual location.
A Certificate of Authenticity from EXTINCTIONS is included with this specimen.
