Here is an interesting ammonite from the Cretaceous of Madagascar. This particular ammonite has a very thick body. The ammonite has been cut in half and both halves have been highly polished. The coiling pattern of the cephalopod is quite evident and the individual body chambers are easily seen. Some of the chambers are hollow and filled with tiny calcite crystals. In the last chamber, there is a very unusual crystal formation. Long, reddish, acicular crystals of what appear to be barite project into the cavity. The exterior of the ammonite has also been polished to reveal the beautiful suture pattern of the ammonite. The wonderful colors, the intricate sutures, and the strange mineralization all combine to make this a very desirable specimen. This is a very pretty ammonite from Madagascar.
