Here is a very interesting fossil crustacean. This is Macrophthalmus latreillei from the Pleistocene of Australia. This specimen is quite large for the type and is 3-dimensionally preserved. The crab exhibits excellent detail. The top of the carapace is covered with a multitude of small granulations. The underside of the carapace has the plate structure clearly defined. Many of the legs are intact and parts of both claws are preserved - the legs and claws are lined, on both margins, with sharp spikes. This is an excellent specimen of Macrophthalmus from Australia.
