Here is an interesting blastoid that we recently acquired in an old collection. This is Pentremites pulchellus from the Pella Formation of Iowa. This blastoid is quite unique in that the small pyramid of plates covering the spiracles is intact - this is very uncommon. A number of fine brachioles (arms) are also present and nicely displayed. This is also extremely rare. The echinoderm is very 3-dimensional and totally free of matrix. It comes in a plastic case with the original identification tag. All of the echinoderm fauna from this site is quite small. You literally have to crawl along, with both eyes close to the ground, to find any specimens. This is a very unusual blastoid from the rattlesnake-infested area of Iowa.
