Here is a very striking specimen of 3-dimensional brachiopods from the Devonian of Ohio. There are two different brachiopods on the plate. A large Paraspirifer bownockeri is on the left side of the slab. This brachiopod is extremely robust and both valves are present and tightly articulated. The specimen on the right side of the plate is Mediospirifer audaculus. This brachiopod possesses longer "wings" and also has both valves intact. Both brachiopods have been replaced by iron pyrite or "fool's gold". The shiny, golden color of the fossils contrasts beautifully with the gray matrix. The brachiopods are nicely positioned on the natural plate of shale which also contains other fossil fragments. This is a very pretty specimen of two different brachiopods from the Silica Shale.
