Here is an unusual ammonite. This is Pachydiscus menuites from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has somewhat faint ribbing and a very rounded keel. This cephalopod has been removed from the surrounding matrix so that it can be viewed from all angles. It is extremely "clean" on both sides and the inner whorls of the mollusk are clearly defined. This wide-bodied ammonite has been replaced by iron pyrite or "fool's gold". The 3-dimensional, shiny, golden ammonite displays the intricate suture pattern in amazing fashion. This is a very fine specimen of Pachydiscus with uncommon pyrite replacement.
