Here is a unique plate of Mississippian fossils from Missouri. There are fifteen blastoids (of two different types) and a crinoid on this slab of limestone. On the far left side of the plate is a fine example of Abatocrinus aequalis. This camerate crinoid is very inflated and exhibits good detail. The nodose plates are quite evident and even the tegmen is present. A large Orophocrinus stelliformis is present on the right side of the slab. This unusual, star-shaped, fissiculate blastoid is highly prized by the local collectors. Randomly scattered across the plate are fourteen specimens of Cryptoblastus melo. These melon-shaped blastoids are well defined - the plate structure is very noticeable and the thin ambulacra are easily seen. It is highly unusual to find such a high concentration of echinoderms in this formation. The whitish coloration of the fossils contrasts nicely with the orangish-brown matrix. They are nicely presented on a large, rectangular plate that is loaded with other echinoderm fragments. This is a very interesting plate of echinoderms from the Lower Burlington Formation.
