Here is an extremely nice brachiopod. This is Echinoconchus alternatus from the Mississippian layers near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This site is very famous for the fine crinoids which are found there. Once in a while, one of these large brachiopods is unearthed. This inflated brachiopod exhibits excellent detail. The form of the brachiopod is clearly defined and the growth lines are quite visible. But the most striking feature of this specimen is the presence of many, many short, thin, fine spines which cover the brachiopod. It is very rare to find these spines intact on a brachiopod. It requires very meticulous preparation to keep these spines from disintegrating during the "cleaning" process. The fossil has very good color and contrast and is well presented on the natural plate of siltstone. This is a great example of this large brachiopod with many spines preserved.
