This is a very nice fossilized mammoth tusk. It is a large tusk from the Woolly Mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius. This specimen is from the same area that was featured in the Discovery Channel special, "Raising the Mammoth". This tusk is from a sub-adult, meaning the mammoth was not quite fully grown when it died. The tusk is complete down to the very tip (the scan cuts off the very tip of the tusk, but it is there). The outer covering of the tusk, or "bark", has been polished off to expose the striking blond color of the fossil ivory. The tusk is solid, not fully hollow, meaning the value of the fossil ivory in the tusk is tremendous. This is a collectible Mammoth tusk that displays beautifully (display stand is included for free).
