This is an unusual fossil invertebrate. It is a Chancelloria pentacta from the Cambrian of Utah. This type of animal is sort of an enigma, and has been found in the Burgess Shale fauna. It was first thought to be a "glass sponge", but it has now been described as a "coeloscleritophoran". This fossil has excellent form and exhibits wonderful detail - the star-shaped sclerites are beautifully preserved and easily seen. The natural, orangish-brown coloration of the fossil contrasts well with the gray matrix. The Chancelloria is nicely positioned on the large plate of shale that also contains a partial cephalon of a trilobite. This is a very fine example of this odd Cambrian animal.
