Here is an excellent cystoid. This is Pleurocystites squamosus from the Ordovician of Ontario, Canada. The theca of this primitive echinoderm is beautifully articulated and exhibits fine detail. The plate structure is easily seen and one pore-rhomb is clearly defined. Both of the uniserial arms are intact which is highly unusual. The long, rapidly tapering stem is still tightly attached. The stem appears to be totally complete which is extremely rare. The cream-colored fossil contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. The cystoid is beautifully centered on the semi-rectangular plate of limestone. This is a "textbook" example of this unusual Ordovician echinoderm.
