This is an outstanding specimen of Strobilocystites calvini from the Devonian of Iowa. Strobilocystites is one of the youngest cystoids known to exist. These primitive echinoderms are usually found in Ordovician and Silurian rocks - very few are found in Devonian age layers - and none are found in younger sediments. This cystoid is highly uncommon and multiple specimens are EXTREMELY rare. There are four examples of Strobilocystites on this plate. The echinoderms are nicely inflated and exhibit fine detail. The plate structure is well defined, and the pore-rhombs are easily seen. Three of the cystoids still have the stem attached. The white cystoids contrast wonderfully with the yellowish matrix. They are nicely positioned on the natural plate of limestone that is loaded with brachiopods and byozoans. This is a spectacular display plate of these unusual echinoderms.
