Here is a great fossil crustacean. This is Macrophthalmus latreillei from the Pleistocene of Australia. This specimen is quite large for the type and is very 3-dimensionally preserved. The crab is very ''clean'' and exhibits excellent detail. The top of the carapace is covered with a multitude of small granulations, and the underside of the carapace has the plate structure clearly defined. Many of the legs are present and one claw is totally intact - the legs and part of the claws are lined, on both margins, with sharp spikes. This is one of the nicest specimens of Macrophthalmus that we have seen.
