Here is a rare echinoid. This is Lepidesthes sp. from the Mississippian layers near Crawfordsville, Indiana. This locality is famous for crinoids, but only occasionally is a complete echinoid unearthed. This sea urchin is somewhat inflated and exhibits very good detail. The plate structure is clearly defined and the ambulacral areas are easily seen. The dark gray echinoid contrasts well with the light gray matrix. It is nicely perched on the plate of siltstone that also contains a crinoid stem. This is a very collectable example of a sea urchin from the Mississippian sea.
