Here is an unusual echinoderm specimen from the Mississippian of Illinois. At the bottom of the piece is a fine specimen of Pentremites sp. This blastoid has many of the long, fine brachioles preserved which is a very rare occurrence. An unusual crinoid, Pterotocrinus sp., is positioned above the blastoid. This crinoid has long spikes at the top of the cup which were probably used for defensive purposes. The echinoderms have good color and contrast and are nicely positioned on the somewhat oval plate of matrix that is loaded with many other echinoderm fragments and bryozoans. This is a very good specimen of a blastoid with the delicate brachioles preserved that just happens to have a scarce crinoid on the same plate.
