Here is a fine example of a Paleozoic bivalve. This is Aviculopecten mazonensis from the famous Mazon Creek area of Illinois. This bivalve is well preserved in a siderite concretion. Both halves of the concretion are present, so both part and counterpart of the fossil are intact. This clam exhibits good detail - the radiating ornamentation of the bivalve is easily seen. This is a nice specimen of Aviculopecten from the Pennsylvanian.
