Here is an unusual vertebrate fossil. This is an extremely rare Astrapotherium tooth from the Miocene of Argentina. Astrapotherium was somewhat like an amynodont rhinoceros. This large tooth is very 3-dimensional and exhibits fine detail. The wrinkled, corrugated enamel is well preserved, and the long root is still tightly attached to the crown of the tooth. The grinding surface of the tooth is nicely defined. The glossy enamel contrasts beautifully with the brownish-gray root. This is a wonderful tooth from this strange South American ungulate.
Note: Argentina has now banned the export of all fossils. We will strictly abide by and enforce this law - we will not acquire new fossils from Argentina. However, this fossil was collected and exported prior to this law, and can be sold legally.
