This is an uncommon type of ammonite. It is a Thomasites gongilensis from Nigeria. This large ammonite is extremely robust and has been replaced by white calcite. The ammonite has been prepared to expose the inner whorls. The beautiful suture pattern is very distinct. The ammonite sits on a small, natural block of matrix that contains other fossils (mostly oysters). This is a wonderful specimen of Thomasites from an unusual fossil location.
