Here is a very pretty specimen of a fossil bivalve. This is Clinocardium sp. from the Pliocene of California. Both valves of the clam are very 3-dimensionally preserved and exhibit great detail. The fine radial ornamentation is clearly defined and the growth lines are easily seen. The whitish color of the fossils contrasts nicely with the gray matrix. Having both valves of the mollusc laying side by side makes for a stunning display. This is an extremely aesthetic example of a fossil bivalve.
