This is a very fine fossil feather from the Eocene of Utah. Bird remains are quite rare in the fossil record - even solitary feathers are very uncommon. This large feather exhibits wonderful detail. The shaft of the feather is easily seen, and the individual barbs are very apparent. The fossil has excellent dark-brown color and contrasts well with the khaki-colored matrix. It is nicely presented on the rectangular plate of shale. This is a great example of a fossil feather from the Green River Formation.
