Here is a very striking U.S. ammonite. This is Discoscaphites conradi from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This ammonite is very 3-dimensional and complete all the way to the aperture. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. This specimen displays these features very clearly. The whitish, nacreous shell of the cephalopod is intact and exhibits nice iridescence. The fossil is wonderfully perched on the large, natural block of dense, concretionary shale that is loaded with fossil bivalves. This is a very pretty ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
