This is a rare heteromorphic ammonite from the Cretaceous of Morocco. This cephalopod starts out life with an open coiling pattern, then grows straight, and then makes a hairpin turn. This unusual ammonite is very 3-dimensional and exhibits good detail. The coarse ribbing and the loose-coiling pattern of the cephalopod are wonderfully displayed. The fossil is well presented on the sculpted block of matrix that also contains another disc-shaped ammonite. The brown color of the fossils contrasts nicely with the light-colored matrix. This is a fine example of this strangely-coiled ammonite from Morocco.
