Here is a superb U.S. ammonite. This is a top-quality specimen of Discoscaphites conradi from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. This ammonite is extremely 3-dimensional and complete all the way to the aperture. The cephalopod exhibits great detail and the whitish, nacreous shell of the cephalopod is intact. The fossil is wonderfully positioned on the large, natural block of dense, concretionary shale. This is a very displayable example of Discoscaphites.
