This is an outstanding fossil echinoid. It is a rare Clypeaster portentosus from the Miocene of Italy. This sea urchin is huge - it is almost 6 inches across and 4 inches high! The extremely 3-dimensional echinoid is totally free of matrix so that it can be observed from all angles. The fine detail of this large echinoid is quite remarkable (much better than the photo). The drooping, petaloid ambulacra are beautifully displayed, and the mouth and anal opening are clearly defined. The punctate detail of the spine attachment points is quite evident. This is a spectacular and very displayable fossil sea urchin from the Miocene of Italy.
