Here is a rare ammonite specimen. This is Aspidoceras sp. from the famous Solnhofen Limestone of Germany. This piece was found many years ago and was acquired from an old German collection. This specimen shows the end of the ammonite, and the extremely large aptychus or aperture covering is present and beautifully displayed. It is very uncommon to find an ammonite aptychus preserved. Both valves of the aptychus are intact and nicely articulated. The fossil has great color and contrast and is well positioned on the natural plate of lithographic limestone that also contains a few dendrites. This is a very unusual cephalopod fossil from an old collection.
