Here is an excellent specimen of Archimedes sp. from the Mississippian of Illinois. This unusual cork-screw shaped bryozoan is unique to the Mississippian of North America. This long colony of bryozoans is extremely 3-dimensional and has been prepared in high relief. The white fossil contrasts wonderfully with the grayish-brown matrix. It is almost perfectly centered on the large, semi-rectangular plate of limestone. This is a very displayable example of this strange bryozoan from Illinois.
