Here is a very good example of a fossil turtle. This is Stylemys nebrascensis from the Oligocene of South Dakota. Fossil turtles are becoming very difficult to collect from this area. Fewer and fewer specimens are found each year. This 3-dimensional specimen is free of matrix and can be viewed from all angles. The scutes of the shell are quite distinct and even the underside shell (plastron) is intact. The whitish coloration of the fossil is quite striking. This is a fine specimen of a fossil turtle from the Oligocene.
