Here is an unusual specimen from the Mississippian of Illinois. This is a Pentremites blastoid with a portion of the stem preserved. Blastoids are very seldom found with an attached stem. This stem is not just in the "vicinity" of the blastoid, but is tightly attached to the base of this primitive echinoderm. This blastoid is inflated and exhibits fine detail. The ambulacra of the blastoid are nicely defined. The fossil has great color and contrast. It is almost perfectly centered on the semi-rectangular plate of limestone. This is a very displayable blastoid plate from a site that has been closed to collecting for a number of years.
