This is an exciting echinoderm specimen. It is an extremely rare multiple plate of Strobilocystites calvini from the Devonian of Iowa. This type of cystoid is one of the youngest known to exist. These primitive echinoderms are usually found in Ordovician and Silurian rocks - very few are found in Devonian age layers - and none are found in younger sediments. There are five examples of this highly uncommon cystoid on this plate. All of the cystoids have the stems attached which is highly unusual. The cystoids are nicely inflated and exhibit fine detail. The coarse granulations of the plates are easily seen, and many of the pore-rhombs are quite distinct. The fossils have very good color and contrast and are well positioned on the rectangular plate that also contains many brachiopods and other fossils. This is a very collectible plate of primitive echinoderms from the Devonian.
