This is a very special fossil. It is actual body hair from the Wooly Mammoth, Mammuthus primigenius. This "wool" was found in the same area that was featured in the Discovery Channel special, "Raising the Mammoth". As you can inagine, only under perfect conditions can actual Wooly Mammoth hair be preserved. This clump of hair probably came from the Mammoth's belly or other soft parts, as the hair is short and fine (see close-up photo for details). The hair is a thick mat - if you hold it up to the light, you can't see through most of it. There is so much hair present, it makes for a museum quality specimen. This is a very unique fossil that is extremely hard to obtain.
