This is a very colorful specimen of an uncommon ammonite. This is Hoploscaphites nebrascensis from the Fox Hills Formation of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has coarse ribs with many rows of prominent nodes and a gently rounded keel. This specimen is extremely robust and exhibits fine detail. The nodes are quite distinct, and even the tiny inner whorls of the ammonite are easily seen. The cephalopod has great, somewhat reddish, iridescent color and is wonderfully displayed on the natural block of concretionary matrix. This is an attractive example of this unusual ammonite from the Cretaceous.
