This is a gorgeous fossil brittlestar. It is a large Furcaster palaeozoicus from the renowned Bundenbach slate of Germany. For many years, this slate was quarried for use in the roofing industry. Since the quarries have closed, the only way to acquire specimens is from old collections. This specimen IS from an old German collection. Complete brittlestars are quite rare in the fossil record. This specimen is wonderfully complete with the central disk and all five arms intact. The individual plates of the arms are even clearly defined. The fossil has been replaced by iron pyrite or ''fool's gold'' and is beautifully displayed in the middle of the slate plate. The brittlestar almost appears to be floating on top of the slab. This is a top-quality fossil brittlestar from one of the most famous fossil sites in the world.
