Beautiful Carpoid From The Cambrian With Baby

This is an outstanding specimen of a carpoid, Castericystis vali, from the Middle Cambrian of Utah. Carpoids are very rare in the fossil record. This primitive echinoderm is more inflated than most specimens from this site and exhibits incredible detail. The long stele is present and tightly articulated with the theca. The theca has very granulose plates. The lone, biserial arm (typical of carpoids) displays excellent plate structure. The fossil has great color and wonderful contrast. It is almost perfectly centered on the plate of shale. There is also a baby specimen of this unique echinoderm present on the plate. It appears that it was attached to the stele of the "mother" carpoid. This is a great specimen of this unusual echinoderm.
