Here is a spectacular ammonite. This is a Discoscaphites conradi from the Cretaceous of South Dakota. This type of ammonite has faint ribbing and a somewhat rounded keel. There are several rows of prominent nodes on the shoulders and near the keel of the ammonite. These features are very clearly defined on this specimen. This ammonite is extremely 3-dimensional and complete all the way to the aperture. The nacreous shell of the cephalopod is present, and many beautiful, iridescent colors are wonderfully displayed. The fossil is well positioned on the large, natural block of dense, concretionary shale that is loaded with many fossil bivalves. This is a gorgeous, very displayable ammonite from the Fox Hills Formation.
