This is an unusual Devonian fossil. It is a cystoid, Rhenocystis lapendulata, from the famous Bundenbach Slate of Germany. The quarry where this specimen was found used to mine roofing slate for decades, but is now shut down. The only way to obtain the unique fossils from this site is through the dispersal of old collections. This cystoid has a long theca with good plate structure, and an aesthetically curving stem is still attached to the body of the echinoderm. The fossil is replaced with iron pyrite or ''fool's gold'' and is beautifully centered on the rectangular (4.5'' X 5.2'') plate of slate. This is a fine example of this primitive echinoderm from a classic fossil location.
