This is a very rare fossil arthropod preserved in a concretion. It is a large Euproops rotundatus (Xiphisurid) from Lancashire, England. This specimen was acquired directly from a British collection - it would have to be, specimens like this rarely turn up. The fossil itself is simply huge - almost 2 inches wide! The crab has exquisite detail and textbook form. It is extremely inflated and 3-D and has wonderful natural color. Although the telson (tail) is cocked to one side, it is present, which is very rare indeed. The telson has many long barb-like spines emanating from either side - again, this is a very unique feature. If that is not enough, the counterpart side of the concretion is present, making for a complete split pair. This is a must-have fossil for collectors whose specialties range from Mazon Creek fauna to Paleozoic arthropods. It is a very special piece that we will probably never be able to replace.
