Here is a very interesting stromatolite from the Precambrian of Australia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae. These closely packed stromatolites are believed to have been deposited in conditions that subjected them to intermittent periods of submergence, possibly seasonal in nature. This chunk of stromatolite has been sliced with a diamond saw and highly polished on one side. The layered pattern of the stromatolites is easily seen, and the different colors of mineral replacement make for a striking display. This is a unique stromatolite specimen from Australia.
