Here is an excellent slice of a stromatolite. This is Conophyton sp. from the Precambrian of Bolivia. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae. It is believed that this stromatolite is 2.2 to 2.4 billion years old! The thick slice of stromatolite has been highly polished on one side, and the layered depositional pattern of the stromatolite is beautifully displayed. The different colors and unique pattern make for a striking exhibit. This is a classic example of a stromatolite from an unusual location.
