This is an excellent specimen of an unusual arthropod. It is a Tuzoia sp., a phyllocarid, from the Lower Cambrian of Canada. Phyllocarids are among the lesser known crustaceans. They are distinguished by a rather large carapace, hinged at the top, which sheltered the anterior part of the body. This specimen displays the spiked carapace in beautiful fashion, and the reticulated ''skin'' pattern is even evident. This phyllocarid has also been found in the famous Burgess Shale which is Middle Cambrian in age. However, there is no mistaking the age of this piece, as there are two cephalons and a mouthplate (hypostoma) of Olenellus sp., a Lower Cambrian trilobite, present on the slab. The fossils have wonderful color and contrast and are beautifully presented on the dense plate of shale. This is a very unique plate of arthropods from the Lower Cambrian.
