This is a nice tooth from an unusual creature. It is a Desmostylus hesperus, a ''sea cow'', tooth from the Miocene of California. Desmostylans were marine mammals that paddled around in shallow water and lived by crushing shellfish between their heavy, columnar teeth. This robust tooth has been removed from the surrounding matrix so that it can be viewed from all angles. It is extremely 3-dimensional, and the six cusps of the tooth are wonderfully defined. A portion of the root of the tooth is intact, and the bluish-black, corrugated enamel of the tooth is well preserved. This is an excellent tooth from this peculiar marine animal.
