Here is a very beautiful stromatolite. This is Conophyton garganicum australe from the Precambrian of Australia. This stromatolite is reported to be over 1 billion years old. Authorities believe that stromatolites were formed by masses of green or blue-green algae. This large slab has been highly polished on one side, and the layered depositional pattern is wonderfully displayed. The creamish-pinkish-red coloration of the thick slab is quite striking. This is a gorgeous stromatolite from the Bangemall Basin of Australia.
