This is a spectacular plate of fossil brittlestars! There are two examples of Ophiopetra nsp. on this slab from the Jurassic of Germany. Fossil brittlestars are relatively uncommon in the fossil record, due to the delicate nature of the thin arms. Both of these brittlestars are wonderfully complete. The large central discs are easily seen and the long, sinuous arms are intact to the tiny tips - even the tube feet of the organisms are beautifully defined. Sometimes, portions of the arms are painted in - not so with this specimen. Under magnification, the individual plates of the arms are quite distinct. The fossils have great color and contrast and are well presented on the unbroken, rectangular plate of lithographic limestone that contains a thin, natural line of pyrolusite dendrites. This is a museum-quality specimen of fossil brittlestars from the famous Solnhofen Limestone.
