Here is a beautiful specimen of a puzzling fossil. This is Phyllograptus sp., a graptolite, from the Ordovician of Utah. Graptolites are extinct marine organisms which are still argued about by authorities as to where they fit into the big picture. Usually, graptolites are preserved as thin, "chalk-like" markings on the rock. However, this graptolite is extremely large and exhibits excellent detail. The "leaf-like" fossil has small, spine-like, clearly defined projections which radiate from the body. This is one of the most wonderful examples of this enigmatic fossil that we have ever seen.
